At Sandown Dental, we aim – above all else – to make each of our patients happy. Every treatment that we offer to our patients is aimed to make their smile the best that it could possibly be. Nothing makes our expertly trained and professional dentist in East Belfast happier than restoring a patient’s smile. This is particularly true in cases where the patient has lost the ability to smile due to the loss of one or more of their teeth. Dental implants are one of the most rewarding treatments that our dentist in East Belfast can provide to patients who need it, and can fully restore their smiles on a permanent basis.

What are dental implants exactly?

Many people out there who have lost one or more of their teeth are not entirely aware of the extent to which they can have their teeth fully restored, through the wonders of modern dental medicine. Whilst treatments such as dental crowns and bridges are commonly used to bridge a gap within a patient’s mouth if they have lost a tooth, these are not a permanent solution, as they do not solve the issue structurally but rather sit on the patient’s gums and solve it superficially. Dental implants however fill the gap at a deeper level. The notion of replacing a tooth at its root with something else isn’t an entirely new one and has actually existed since as far back as the Romans – although their ‘implants’ were far from those of modern standards. Today however, thanks to advancements in science and medicine, our dentist in East Belfast can now fully restore a lost tooth at its core.

How do they work?

Dental implants operate, fundamentally, in the same way as a natural tooth. By inserting a titanium-alloy socket into the jawbone of the patient, it can bond with the bone and become a firm, solid anchor point for a denture to be attached. As such, those who opt for dental implant treatment typically find that their implants both look and feel identical to a natural tooth. One of the main attractions to dental implants is that, unlike dental bridges or crowns, dental implants rarely require several return visits to the dental practice once they have been installed. Anyone who is looking to restore their smile to its fullest potential and beauty, ought to speak to one of our approachable and expert staff here at Sandown Dental.

What does treatment involve?

Dental implant treatment is a process which begins – as all cosmetic dentistry procedures at Sandown Dental do – with a consultation. This lets the patient be made fully aware of the intricacies of the dental implant process and what the patient can expect in terms of results and treatment time frames. Installing an implant involves a small dental operation, during which the titanium-alloy root is embedded inside the bone structure of the patient’s jaw. Once this has been carried out, there is a short healing period. During this time, the titanium-alloy within the implant bonds iself with the natural bone tissue of the patient. After this has taken place, a prosthesis is then fixed to an exposed small abutment, and the space is permanently filled and restored.
